Ahhhhhh we had to do a still life for my painting class!!! I hate these so much it took me a few weeks to get around to it… Luckily my friend Monica Taddei loaned me her skull. His name is Victor, and he’s missing a tooth. I think he’s usually seen with a cigarette hanging around Hampstead, but for this month he’s chilling out in South Ken with a pencil. |

Next TAD Assignment… quick light studies of something we can actually be physicall present to paint. As I’m doing this digitally I found this a bit limiting, but luckily I have a nice view outside the window nearest my desk. All 3 paintings were done in 1.5 hours, and in Photoshop. 2 were done from observation, and the third from imagination. Can you guess which one it is? |

God it’s been a while since I posted… but as you can see I’ve been really busy! I’ve started my 6 month course in Digital painting through The Art Department, taught by the amazing Jason Manley. For our first assignment we were given a mastercopy and the piece selected was a very thickly-painted oil piece by Dean Cornwell. The job was to recreate the painting stroke-for -stroke as closely as we could within the time limit, while keeping an eye on matching colours and proportions. For this piece I used Photoshop, mainly the generic round brush and charcoal brush. I also did not use a grid or select colours from the original, trying to do it entirely by eye. |

Some sketches done recently of the main characters in Philip Reeve’s excellent Sci-fi/Steampunk novel “Mortal Engines”. I highly recommend this book– it’s a fun read, and am thinking about doing some more characters from the first book in the series. |

Just some quick sketches I did today to warm up… one 10 min. and one 5 min. Trying on a looser style for my Photoshop line work, which I’m finding difficult because its never quite as fast to draw on a tablet as it is when you’re able to look at your page…. but hopefully one day I can afford a Cintiq! |
